Have anNVIDIA card? Use Ubuntu? Guild Wars now runs flawlessly!
Using the upcoming Ubuntu Jaunty release, the very latest NVIDIA driver and the latest version of WINE (1.1.19), Linux users will find that Guild Wars runs absolutely beautifully (and I'm talking loading faster than on Windows). I get a loss of about 4 fps from Windows (55 to about 51 fps on average) and everything just... works. It's identical to the Windows experience. Bear in mind this is the cutting edge of OSs, WINE and NVIDIA drivers, so don't expect out-of-the-box playing just yet. It's just a hint that brilliant things are on the way for those dying to ditch Windows (but have GW as their only limitation).
I even tried it with Compiz running at the same time, with framerates around 30-40 - that's faster than the Vista/7 drivers on the same PC!
Just a heads-up
I might put a video together to show just how smooth it is.

hmm, you sure it's not running faster, because it's running in dx8.1 mode instead? or maybe... you forgot to turn on AA/AF? it's unlikely that linux with Wine can run GW faster than windows, to the point of being impossible, no matter how well Wine and ubuntu are programmed. maybe you have too much junk on your windows installation and that's screwing with the performance there.

Funny, I have a four year old computer with an ATI card in it and I get a constant 70+ FPS. Linux isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Heck, my old server computer is 9 years old and it runs GW with ~40-50 FPS.

My Graphics card is an NVIDIA 7600 GS, not a speed demon by any means.
I have a brand new XP install on the other partition, using optimised NGO NVIDIA drivers. I get 55-60 fps on these. On Ubuntu I get 45-50 fps in Proph areas and (I've just discovered) it dips to around 35-40 in GW:EN areas.
This is DirectX 9.0c, as I can see the "fire" effect in Gunnar's Hold - the distortion. I think it's mighty impressive work by the NVIDIA and WINE team. I'll put together a video tomorrow probably - comparing the 2.

Cool. Buying an ASUS laptop with an Nvidia card this summer and will also install Ubuntu on it so this is great news.
Also, are you going to record via an utility like Fraps/Gamecam? If you do, it might affect the framerates.

So you get 51-55 average? Whats an average, how do you calculate average fps? In crowded places like toa ad1 i get 50-70 fps and in some empty outposts or going solo dungeon/explorable i get 100-180 fps. My card is gforce 8500 gt.

Sounds like you've got VSync on?
GW also has some wierd shuffling/loading/optomizations/something going on bottlenecking things more than just raw render power. You generally get higher FPS standing still than moving around. (assuming you aren't already at vsync cap...)

I installed latest wine (1.1.20) on Kubuntu 9.04
My system is a AMD XP +2100, 1 gig memory and also the 7600gs card.
Drivers: 180.44
At the start screen i barely get 20 FPS and ingame it is even worse.
I'm eager to learn how you did get it running so well.
Could you please share your settings?
xorg.conf, driver version, wine configuration etc.
